What is WPC wall paneling?

WPC wall paneling, or wood plastic composite, is a newly developed material made from a combination of wood fibers, plastic, and other additives which can add unique properties to the finished wall paneling. The wood fibers are usually obtained from sawdust, wood shavings, or other wood waste, while the plastic can be made from a variety of sources, including recycled plastic or virgin plastic.

WPC is considered a more environmentally friendly version of the tradition PVC panels which have come under scrutiny as of late due to their reported leaking of toxic chemicals in the environment.

What is PVC?

PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride is a thermoplastic polymer that has a wide range of applications in the construction industry. It is most commonly used as electrical conduit and for storm and wastewater discharge piping. More recently though, it has been molded into a variety of other products including wall paneling.

The durability and versatility of this product coupled with its relative inexpensiveness has made it a go-to for many builders, tradespeople and DIY-ers alike. PVC is not without its drawbacks though, which is why alternative products like WPC are being developed.

What is the difference between PVC wall panels and WPC wall panels

WPC and PVC are both suitable materials for wall panelling, but they have som key differences

The main advantage of WPC wall panels is that they combine the best properties of both wood and plastic. They are usually formed to have a natural wood-like appearance, meaning they can generally be used in lieu of traditional timber products. PVC wall panels tend to have a more uniform and ‘glossy’ look making them more suitable for internal walling.

Both WPC & PVC wall panels are typically very durable, resistant to moisture and wearing but due to the mix of materials and variability of additives, specific WPC wall panels tend to be the more robust choice and more suitable for external applications as they can contain unique additives that add UV and fire resisting properties to the panels.

PVC has come under fire recently as it is considered to be destructive to the environment and one of the most toxic man made plastics as it results in the release of chorine-based chemicals. WPC wall panels are made from a combination of natural and synthetic materials, which makes them more eco-friendly than PVC wall panels.

WPC and PVC wall panels are installed in a very similar way, but WPC wall panels sometimes require special tools or techniques, such as fixings or adhesives that are compatible with the unique composition of the WPC panel. For this reason it is always best to consult the manufacturers specific product installation guide.

Characteristics can vary depending on the specific product and manufacturer, both WPC and PVC wall panels have their pro’s and con’s. WPC is usually slightly more expensive but it is definitely a positive step in the composite plastic ‘game’ and I look forward to the future advancements of these types of products.
