What is Epoxy?

Epoxy is a two-part adhesive that forms when you mix epoxy resin and a curator or hardener, creating a strong polymer composition.

What is Epoxy used for?

Epoxy is best known for its high level of durability and strength, along with its outstanding, clean and clinical finish. It is currently being used for a multitude of applications for sealing, coating and as an adhesive and works well with wood, concrete, PVC and glass.

Epoxy Driveway – Why is it a mistake?

Epoxy is extremely resistant to wearing, moisture and cracking. This often leads people to believe that epoxy would be great to use to seal their driveways, but just like Superman, this Super-product has its own Kryptonite – the Sun’s UV rays.

When an Epoxy coating is exposed to UV light, directly or indirectly, it causes irreversible damage by way of photodegradation. This process destabilizes the Epoxy as the UV light is absorbed and causes the coating to break down.

There has been some success in stabilizing Epoxy coatings from UV degradation in recent years with some products combining a Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer with the Epoxy resin to absorb the UV light, but eventually, and especially in highly exposed applications like a driveway, the stabilizers become full or are weathered away and lose their effectiveness.

Other products use zinc UV blocking additives, but this process negatively affects the curing of the Epoxy and greatly reduces the strength of the final product.
